What is the difference between closed and open systems with milk extraction devices?

Surely, when you searched for various types of milk extraction devices, you read that one of the features is that the milk extraction device is a closed system or an open system, so what does that mean?

Why is the closed system better? It also reduces cleaning time, preserves the milk extraction device, and extends its lifespan.

Most importantly, it gives you comfort and does not worry about milk leaking into the pump.

Closed system or open system! what's the difference between them ?

Open system:

There is no barrier preventing milk from leaking into the air tube or pump

It is possible that milk will leak into them, provided that the tube is cleaned well

To prevent any contamination from forming inside it, which makes cleaning the device and pump accessories more difficult

It requires additional effort, and the possibility of milk contamination is small but present

Closed system:

  • It features a diaphragm between the parts in contact with the milk and between the air tube and the pump
  • It prevents air pollution, such as dust, from reaching the milk
  • Or milk leaks into the air tube and pump, so it is easy for you to clean the parts of the milk extraction device
  • It gives you comfort when using and not worrying about milk leaking into the pump or tube

What is the closed system of the Spectra milk extraction device?

The closed system of Spectra devices is a backflow preventer located between the cones and the pneumatic tube

It consists of 3 pieces, white silicone in the middle, with a back and front cover

It protects the air tube and pump from milk flowing into them.

note:

Care must be taken to ensure that the backflow preventer is cleaned well by disassembling it into parts and then cleaning it

Make sure before using the devices that all parts are completely dry, as any moisture can prevent the device from performing well

Here is how to properly clean and sterilize the accessories and the backflow preventer. We also recommend replacing the backflow protector every 6 months when using the device on a daily basis, once or twice.

Every 3 months when used daily and intensively 4 times or more to maintain the device’s performance.
