common questions

  • Is the Haakaa pump only for collecting leaks?

The Haakaa Pump has gained the loyalty of followers due to its amazing ability to catch any leak of precious milk that would otherwise get lost in the breast pad. You can sit back and rest assured that your Haakaa pump will never let you down when it comes to leaking. But is this its only function? of course not! Can you use the Haakaa the same way you would use any other breast pump? certainly. As long as there is milk in your breasts, the constant suction of your Haakaa pump will draw it out—and not just while your milk is leaking.

  • Will the Haakaa pump change my milk production?

Again, lots of options and variables. It really depends on how you're going to use it. When you're just using it to catch your leaks, it's still using strong, continuous suction, so it's likely to extract more from you than just milk that would have come out on its own anyway. You will know this by the amount of milk you get. If you are leaking milk naturally and on your own, it will not affect your supply much, but if it is more than that - your supply will increase. Breast milk works on supply and demand, so the more you take in, the more your body will produce. This is the same for any type of breast pump.

  • What if my Haakaa pump hurts?

Make sure that your nipple does not come into contact with the silicone at all, because if it does, it may hurt. Especially if you're pumping to relieve your sore nipples from nursing. Avoid putting them under any undue pressure.

The Haakaa pump's method of pumping milk is different from regular manual or electric pumps that squeeze and release repeatedly. With the Haakaa, the suction is continuous so you have to check if it is plugged in snugly and adjust if not.

  • Why did my pump lose its suction? Have you tried stronger suction?

Sometimes, when our bodies constantly change after the birth of our babies, the suction power required changes as well. When installing, do you fold the flange back, press down on the bottom of the pump, center it over the nipple, loosen the flange and unzip? This is the most effective way to install them. The more pressure you press on the bottom of the pump, the stronger the suction. Another tip is to help your breast by holding or cupping it with one hand while attaching the pump in the other hand so you can really center it on your breast and allow the pump to grip a larger area. If none of these tips work and it still does not suction properly, the silicone material may have worn down and lost its suction ability. This can happen sometimes depending on how often you use and sterilize it, as well as how you wash and sterilize it - the more times you sterilize your pump, the faster it will lose suction. Some mothers find that they need to replace their pumps after a few months while others need their pumps for years. It really varies for each person based on each of these factors!

  • Why am I not getting enough milk?

We recommend pumping while the baby is feeding on the other side because this stimulates the other breast. If you are not breastfeeding, try placing a warm cloth on the breast and massaging it to encourage milk flow. Every mom and her milk supply are different, so don't get discouraged if you're not getting as much as another mom!

  • Can the Haakaa pump be used as a primary breast pump or is it only designed to collect milk leakage at feeding time?

You can definitely use the Hakaa as a basic pump. Some women simply use our pumps to catch excess milk that might otherwise get lost in a nursing pad. However, you can use it to pump milk as you would any manual pump. It is simply a matter of placing the pump on your breast and allowing the suction to gradually and naturally draw milk from your breast. All that is needed is a smooth flow of milk. Therefore, we recommend breastfeeding the baby on the other side because it naturally causes your milk to flow. Alternatively, if you are far from your baby, you can gently massage your breast with your hand or place a warm towel on your breast to help the milk flow.

  • Why do I have pain/tenderness when I pump with the Haakaa breast pump now?

It seems that you may have too much suction power as it is not normal for it to be painful on your nipples at all. When installed, simply squeeze the bottom of the pump, position it over the nipple and release. Keep in mind that the more pressure you press on the bottom of the pump, the stronger the suction. Since our bodies are constantly changing after giving birth, the level of suction may change and may require you to try several times until you find the suction that best suits your needs.

  • What size do the Haakaa breast pump flanges come in?

Unlike an electric pump that has several different sized flanges, the Haakaa pump is one size fits all . This is because the edge is made entirely of soft, flexible silicone.

How do you clean your Haakaa products?

  • How do I clean my Haakaa products?

Clean your Haakaa products after each use with hot water and soap. Use a soft brush or sponge.

We recommend sterilizing your Haakka products using any steam sterilization system or by boiling in water for 2-3 minutes.

Do not use UV sterilizers to clean this product as it may affect its life.

We strongly recommend that you do not use any bleach or sanitizing tablets to clean your Haakaa products as they may affect the transparency of your product. Although your products may become opaque after using detergent to wash them, silicone does not leach and is still completely safe to use. If you're still concerned, you can sterilize the pump again by boiling in water, just to be safe!

  • Can I use UV sterilizers with silicone?

The easiest and simplest way to sterilize silicone is to boil it in water for 2-3 minutes. If you use a UV sterilizer, you may end up reducing the lifespan of your product which can eventually cause the silicone to become sticky and unusable over time. For these reasons, we do not recommend using UV sterilizers for Haakaa silicone products.

  • I accidentally used a bleach based cleaner to clean my products! Are the products still safe to use?

Cleaners containing bleach can reduce the life of silicone products and cause them to become sticky and unusable. If your products still look good after brief contact with a bleach-based cleaner, they are still safe to use. If you are unsure, you can always sterilize your products by boiling in water for 2-3 minutes.

  • Why is my product blurry and blurry?

Silicone is an absorbent material and can absorb the colors and odors of materials it comes into contact with. Although your silicone products are dishwasher safe, we recommend washing them by hand with hot, soapy water. To sterilize, we recommend boiling in water for 2-3 minutes or using a steam sterilizer.

We strongly recommend that you do not use any bleach or sterilizing tablets to clean your Haakaa products as they may affect the purity of your product. Although your products may become opaque after using detergent to wash them, silicone does not leach and is still completely safe to use. If you're still concerned, you can sterilize the pump again by boiling in water, just to be safe!

Some moms have said that boiling the pump in water with a little white vinegar can help improve the purity of the pump, so you may want to try that.

  • When should I wash/sterilize my Haakaa products?

It really depends on what you prefer. In the first three months after the baby is born, it is recommended that the pump and all baby bottles that are used be sterilized after each use. After this time, some mothers continue to do this and others tend to wash their pumps with hot water and soap after each use and sterilize after several uses. It depends on what makes you most comfortable and suits you!

  • How to quickly clean and dry silicone products?

Please note that the following instructions only refer to products made entirely of silicone and do not refer to products containing any other materials. Cleaning methods may not be suitable for non-silicone products.

To clean silicone, just scrub it well with hot, soapy water and rinse. Dry the exterior and let it air dry on a drying rack. But, if you're in a hurry to reuse them, just pop them in the microwave for 2-4 minutes (stopping them halfway to flip them) and they'll come out completely dry!

  • My pump has become sticky, what should I do?

Sometimes, silicone can act as a magnet and attract surrounding objects or absorb odors, colors, etc. We suggest hand washing your breast pump under hot, soapy water using a slightly abrasive sponge and gently scrubbing the outside. This usually helps!
