What is a supplemental feeding tube set?

When you're a new mom, all the terms and phrases you're thrown at can be a little confusing. We get it, we've been there too! What is the difference between crying and colic? Where does nipple confusion come from? It can be difficult to wrap your head around everything during those early sleep-deprived days with your newborn!

Something you may have heard of is a supplemental feeding tube (SNS) , also known as a lactation aid or breastfeeding supplement. The SNS is a device that many mothers who have breastfeeding problems can use to help provide nutrition to their little ones. So what exactly is a supplemental nursing system, and how does it work?

What is a supplemental feeding tube?

A supplemental feeding tube (SNS) is a special device designed to assist mothers by adding breast milk or formula to the breast through a thin feeding tube. Many mothers and their little ones have found this little system incredibly helpful when they are experiencing breastfeeding issues such as feeding difficulties, low milk supply, extra feeding and more.

This set is designed to be used with the Haakaa Gen.3 silicone baby bottle, with variable flow (X-shaped) nipple. Unlike other SNS systems that hang around the neck, the flow of this silicone feeding tube set can be controlled in three ways: by squeezing the body of the bottle, moving the bottle up or down, or using the flow controller!

This Haakaa Silicone Supplemental Feeding Tube Kit contains an inlet tube, outlet tube, tube adapter, flow controller, cleaning brush, medical tape, and carrying case. All parts that come into contact with your baby's milk are made of food-grade silicone, and everything is BPA, PVC, and phthalate free!

When should I use a supplemental feeding tube?

If you are able to continue your breastfeeding journey without using SNS – great! However, there are some mothers who may choose to use SNS because they need a little extra help as they learn the art of breastfeeding. Common reasons why some may be used include not having enough supply to meet baby's demand, experiencing tongue tie that affects baby's ability to feed or other difficulties with latching. SNS can be used both short-term and long-term – so don't worry if it takes more than a few days for your supply to increase, or if it takes longer for baby to learn how to latch properly!

A supplemental feeding tube also allows a non-breastfeeding mother to bond with her baby through the experience of breastfeeding and direct skin-to-skin contact. This can include adoptive parents, surrogate mothers, and more.

Note: We recommend seeing a breastfeeding specialist or medical professional if you have any concerns about breastfeeding and feel that SNS could be beneficial for you and your baby.

How does a supplemental feeding tube work?

The Haakaa Silicone Supplemental Feeding Tube Kit works by attaching a supplemental milk bottle to the breast, using an inlet tube to draw milk from the bottle and a smaller outlet tube to feed your baby directly. The inlet and outlet pipes are connected by a pipe adapter.

While your baby is feeding from your breast, supplemental milk is delivered through the tube to his mouth. This means your baby will get any milk you produce along with supplemental milk as well, all while helping the system replicate the breastfeeding experience. Not only does this provide your baby with any extra nutrition he or she may need while feeding, but it can also encourage breast milk production while your baby sucks!

How do I clean my supplemental feeding tube?

To clean your silicone feeding tube set after use, simply put hot water in your baby's bottle and run the water through the tube (as you would when using a milk tube) until any excess is rinsed away.

Scrub the inside of the inlet tube by pulling the included tube brush through it. Repeat as necessary. Once done, sterilize them by boiling them in water for 2-3 minutes or use a steam sterilizer.
